The team had a pleasant surprise guest today as a lion dance troupe paid a visit to the office. For those of you who are not familiar with this practice, a lion dance is a form of traditional dance in Chinese culture in which performers mimic a lion’s movement in a lion costume to bring in good luck, fortune and prosperity.
After a quick preparation by members of the troupe, the team was treated to a wonderful performance.
The lion strutted around the office with its regal demeanor, stopping at each desk to perform a quick dance which is thought to bring in good luck.
Even though lion dances can be frequently seen during the Lunar New Year period, everyone in the office could not contain our excitement during the performance. It’s one thing to see a lion dance performance from afar but experiencing it first-hand and up-close would bring out the kid in everybody. The lion in the dance was trying to engage with us throughout the performance as well.
The lion also took its time to distribute the items that was being prepared to those of us watching the dance. It was truly a spectacle as items like candy, chocolate, and even mandarins seemed to spurt out of the lion’s mouth, while the rest of us tried our best to catch them.
Having a performance that is believed to bring in good luck and fortune in the office was certainly not a bad idea, as it was definitely an entertaining experience as well. Now we’re all looking forward to next year’s lion dance!
